Things People Say by MutantPenguin Things People Say by MutantPenguin
I've seen people complaining before, and getting all bent out of shape, because someone said their work looks like Speed Racer, or Astroboy, or Dragonball, or some other anime. But don't know why you'd get upset!? It doesn't bother me. I take it as a compliment that they can see the distinctive anime style in my work. That's what I'm aiming at after all. And they're just simply picking one they're familiar with, reguardless of how you may feel about the particular show.

And yes, pirates do watch Yu-gi-oh!

Edit: Something I just noticed thats kinda funny. When I originally drew this, back in early 2005, I didn't use wooden pencils, just mechancal ones. But now I use wooden blue pencils almost exclusively.... Well, I guess only I would find that amusing... >_>

I know your pain ALL TOO WELL!!!!

It happen everytime i draw humaniod characters in public.
Sometimes when i draw creatures on the other hand I often get calls of "Demon"... But the best one was the time with the priest who wondered by one day while watching me draw something with horns fangs, cloven hooves, multiple eyes and a scythe blade tail... He just kind of pointed and stared.

Aw, the little penguin snapped. :)

And speaking of Yu-Gi-Oh...
Three words: "The Abridged Series." [link]

They should show that stuff on TV instead of the real thing. Seriously.

"For some reason playing a card game has caused me to become severely injured". Heh. Yeah that pretty much sums it up but in a more interesting way. The show was beyond ridiculous. No if they would only put Hikaru no Go on tv. (...like Go board makers are gonna fund an anime...)

Hahahaha, I remember this one time I was drawing at the zoo with Grim, and we had this thundering horde of children swoop down on us and go "OMG LOOK AT THE ARTISTS!!!"

They were generally not leaving us alone and wanting a look in our sketchbook. We might have taken it with better humour if we weren't trying very hard to focus on drawing the tiger who kept moving.

Grim: ...hm. It is about feeding time.
Lex: *evil griiiiiiiin*

The tiger seemed to take pity on us and actually held still for a minute after the kids left. XD

'Held still'? Or stalking the prey that seems to have been left behind by the herd!?

Well, stood still in plain sight, so I don't think was stalking. XD We were the ones that weren't emitting high pitched shrieking noises, after all.

XD Oh god, I remember people telling me things like that.

Another thing they say: "Is that Sailor Moon? :O". Usually if you're drawing girls, of course.

I only get mad because try to right off all anime under one title. They'll see Sailor Moon or DBZ and try to equate it to all anime. There are animes out there like FMA and Cowboy Beebop that are much deeper than typical shojo or shonen comics.

Yes, but if their only point of reference is that one cartoon, then they have no other standard to measure it by. I have to presume that they are fairly ignorant of the show, and anime as a whole, and are not making any base assessement of the characters or shows. But if the say it with a snarled lip, and a snotty attitude, it would be different story.
I know quite a few people who are into art, super-heroes and american comics, and even martial arts, but totally ignore anime and manga, and make comments like... "Oh, that's from that cartoon network show with the wolf guy in the red hakama (-i.e. Inu-yasha.)" or "Oh, that's a girl from that Sailor Moon show!", but I just say "No, it's 'such and such' but it's done in the similar style."

[The Inuyasha comment was actually made on the Maison Ikkoku pic that I have posted (that even says 'Maison Ikkoku' on it!) But it was created same artist so it was actually a pretty good call!]

LOL those quotes are funny because I heard things like that before I stopped talking to people. I don't understand why people who like US comics dislike anime ones? But I see what you mean with the point of reference. I didn't until recently get into Inuyasha, so I wouldn't know more that about 10 characters.
